Last night, Thursday, May 4th the Berea-Midpark Band program held its final concert of the season recognizing the band class of 2023 and announcing award recipients in a variety of categories.

Presented to a deserving student who always gives it their best effort in making our band program better. Like Tom, this student works tirelessly without worrying about being recognized for their dedication to the Titan Band.

The Kaity Schauer Award
The Kaity Schauer Award is given in memory of Kaitlyn Schauer. Like Kaitlyn, this award recognizes a student who embodies their love of music, their family and friends, and who has what it takes to put up a fight when life challenges them. May your spirit and strength be an inspiration to others as well.

The Director’s Award
This award is designed to pay recognition to an underclass student who has displayed the outstanding qualities of cooperation, work ethic, dependability and leadership.

The Dan Barth Achievement Award
The Dan Barth Achievement Award is presented to a band student who demonstrates a willingness to work hard and prepare the assigned music to the best of their ability. The student demonstrates a consistent work ethic, leadership, dependability, and who has earned the respect of their peers.

The Louis Armstrong Jazz Award
Louis Armstrong was an outstanding musician who introduced listeners around the world to jazz music. Each year, an outstanding jazz musician is chosen from the Jazz Ensemble for this award. The criteria for the jazz award includes dependability, leadership and the ability to solo through improvisation.

The Berea-Midpark Music Department Award
This award recognizes a student who performs at the highest level in the Orchestra, Choir and Band programs. This individual is considered the top student in all three groups and is selected by the directors of the music department.

Erin DiFrancesco
The Patrick S. Gilmore Award
The Patrick S. Gilmore Award was created to recognize outstanding musicianship, service, dependability and leadership in the band program. A student selected for this award demonstrates all of these qualities as expected of the student leaders in the band program by the directors.

Alex Dettmer
The John Philip Sousa Award
For over forty years, the John Philip Sousa Award has been presented to honor the most deserving band student in programs around the country. The Sousa Award recognizes superior musicianship, leadership, dependability, loyalty and cooperation. In short, the qualities directors strive to develop in all of the students.

We also want to thank Mayor, Cyril Kleem and Berea City Council President, Jim Maxwell who attended last night’s concert to announce and unveil the new honorary name of Maple Avenue next to Berea-Midpark High School as “Fudale Way” in honor of former Berea and Midpark Band Director, Jim Fudale.
